The Haskayne Learning Centre, named in recognition of our long-standing donors, Dick and Lois Haskayne, is the largest non-university training facility of its kind in Western Canada. We have become a national leader for training in psychology, social work, and marriage and family therapy students.
CCC provided training to 124 undergraduate and graduate students in 2021, all receiving their training and supervision online. We developed and delivered engaging and informative online onboarding and orientation experiences for new students and staff. This provided the foundations for working remotely to provide counselling services to Calgary and surrounding area.
CCC counselling students participate in weekly clinical practice seminars where they learn counselling best practices in many areas, including:
- Working with children and families
- Working with couples
- Trauma
- Feedback Informed Treatment
- Informed perspectives on violence
- Working with diversity
- Working with anxiety and depression
In 2021, students engaged in a research study comparing three different clinical supervision strategies to determine if there is one in particular that is more effective in enhancing graduate student counselling learning and improving student counsellor client outcomes. Students worked with expert coaches: Dr. Bruce Wampold, focusing on Deliberate Practice Supervision; Dr. Michael Ellis, focusing on Competency Based Supervision; and Dr. Robbie Babins-Wagner (CCC CEO) and Cathy Keough (CCC Director of Counselling Initiatives), focusing on Routine Outcome Monitoring Supervision.
We started a new initiative as part of our training program, offering webinars to students and staff, and to external audiences at their request. The two area-specific webinars developed are: Non-Suicidal Self-Injury: Assessment and Risk Management, and Crisis De-Escalation: Guidelines and Strategies. CCC successfully renewed Approved Continuing Education program approval for providing accredited continuing education in live webinar format.
